Superfast Internet Services Expand to Gummersbach Region
In the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia, the city of Gummersbach is set to embark on a significant digital transformation. Contracts for the broadband expansion were signed in July 2023, paving the way for construction to commence in September.
Tim Grebner, the head of the Broadband Expansion Task Force, announced that the project will benefit a total of 424 addresses, including 247 residential and 177 business addresses. The expansion aims to address the city's previously underserved areas, many of which currently receive less than 30 Mbit/s.
As part of the project, affected addresses will receive fiber optic cables directly to their homes. This upgrade will enable them to access bandwidths of up to 1,000 Mbit/s, a substantial improvement over their current connections.
The broadband expansion project will require approximately 83 kilometers of trenching. Temporary restrictions on streets and sidewalks are expected during this phase. The city has pledged to minimise these restrictions and has emphasised that all necessary information will be shared with the affected residents in advance.
The city will cover an economic gap of around 10 million euros for the broadband expansion. Federal and state funds will cover half each of the costs, demonstrating a collective commitment to digital progress.
To optimise synergies and avoid unnecessary construction sites, empty pipes will be laid during the broadband expansion for future projects.
