Surgeon "Pech" expresses regret after Lierhaus's brain operation

Monica Lierhaus, a well-known TV presenter in Germany, underwent a life-changing brain surgery on January 8, 2009, at a Hamburg clinic. The surgery was scheduled to treat a life-threatening brain aneurysm that was discovered during a routine check-up.

Lierhaus, who was 55 at the time, had made a name for herself as one of the faces of "Sportschau" and had worked for pay-TV channel Sky and RTL Aktuell in recent years. She was also known for hosting TV shows in addition to her sports reporting, and had reported on and presented the most important events in German sports for ARD.

Before her surgery, Lierhaus expressed confidence in a speedy recovery, stating that she was certain everything would be fine. However, complications arose during the operation, resulting in Lierhaus being in a coma for months.

Doctors initially told Lierhaus that she would never walk again, but she remained optimistic and was determined to recover and return to work by the end of January 2009.

Interestingly, the surgeon who treated Lierhaus during the operation was performing his last surgery before retirement. Lierhaus expressed sympathy for him but the surgeon's name is not mentioned in the sources.

Despite the complications during her surgery, Lierhaus does not blame anyone for what happened. She believes it was simply bad luck. Her career advancement and subsequent inability to have children were factors that may have saved her life, as a birth would have likely caused her aneurysm to burst.

Today, Lierhaus is part of the sports team at RTL Aktuell and continues to work in television. She views her unfulfilled wish to have children in a positive light, as it may have saved her life. Lierhaus remains grateful for the medical professionals who helped her through her difficult time and continues to inspire others with her resilience and determination.
