Surveillance Cameras Capture Potential Sexual Assault Threat Towards Muslim Women in Uttar Pradesh Amid Celebrations

In Sitapur, India, a video clip has surfaced online, causing widespread concern and calls for action. The priest, identified as Nritya Gopal Das, the local mahant of a small town called Khairabad, is seen making communal and provocative comments from inside a jeep.

The video, reportedly filmed outside a mosque in Sitapur district, 100 km from Lucknow, on April 2, 2022, at 2 PM, has sparked outrage as the priest allegedly threatens to murder someone and mentions an amount of 28 lakh being accumulated for this. He also reportedly threatens to kidnap Muslim women and publicly rape them if any Muslim harasses a girl in the area.

The video, shared by Mohammed Zubair, founder of fact-check website AltNews, on April 7, 2022, shows the priest in the presence of police personnel. Yet, despite the video's circulation and the seriousness of the threats, no action has been taken by the police even after five days.

Twitter users have flagged the statements in the video clip to the UN human rights body and the National Commission for Women, seeking rigorous intervention in the matter. Several users have also asked for action against the spiritual leader, who is reportedly known as "Bajrang Muni."

In response, the Uttar Pradesh police have stated that a senior policeman is investigating the matter. Another video, circulating on social media, shows four police officers in the same location, three of them in the same car as the priest.

The threats in the video are met with loud cheers from the crowd, with shouts of "Jai Shri Ram." The incident has caused a stir, highlighting the need for prompt and decisive action to maintain peace and uphold the law.
