Suspected Individual Detained by Federal Police in Hamburg Following Alleged Break-ins at Railway Luggage Lockers; Arrestee Transferred to U-Haftanstalt for interrogation

A 34-year-old man, known to the police for previous property crimes, is currently in preliminary custody in connection with a series of break-ins at Hamburg's Altona and main train stations. The suspect is strongly suspected of breaking into four luggage lockers between August 31 and September 4, 2025.

The last break-in occurred at the Hamburg main station at around 07:25 on September 4. A DB employee discovered the break-in later that morning and informed the federal police station at the main station. The video recordings from security cameras in the Hamburg train station area were analyzed by the police and security authorities, including the use of AI-based video surveillance, to identify the suspect.

The suspect was recognized and taken into custody provisionally by patrol officers at around 15:05 at the Hamburg main station. A lever, suspected to be a tool for the break-ins, was found during a search of the suspect's clothing and backpack. After being confronted with the evidence, the suspect confessed to the crime.

A criminal proceeding has been initiated against the suspect for aggravated theft (§ 243 StGB). The amount of cash stolen cannot yet be specified, but the material damage from the break-ins is estimated at least 1,100 euros per locker.

The federal police's further investigations are still ongoing.
