Tablet market braces for five-pronged assault by Archos
In a recent announcement, Archos has introduced a new lineup of tablets, offering a variety of screen sizes to cater to different user preferences. The new collection includes the Archos 28, Archos 32, Archos 43, Archos 7, and the flagship Archos 101.
Starting with the smallest offering, the Archos 28 sports a 2.8-inch resistive touchscreen and runs on Android 2.2 Froyo. It is set to be available by the end of September for just $99.99. The Archos 32, with a 3.2-inch screen, 8 GB of internal memory, a rear camera, and the same processor as the Archos 28, will also be available by the end of September, priced at $149.99.
Moving up the size spectrum, we have the Archos 43, replacing the Archos 5, which boasts a 4.3-inch screen, a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, and a thickness of 0.35 inches. The Archos 43 is scheduled to hit the shelves around mid-October.
The Archos 7, the first in the series to feature a capacitive touchscreen, comes with a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen, an accelerometer, MicroSD storage, a front-facing VGA camera, a standard USB port, and a mini-HDMI port. Pre-loaded with video chat applications, it costs $274.99 and is expected to be available by the end of October.
Stepping into the larger territory, the Archos 101 tablet boasts a 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 1024 × 600. It is half an inch thick, weighs .93 pounds, and is powered by a 1 GHz processor. The Archos 101 tablet supports 720p video playback, includes a front-facing VGA camera, a USB port, and an HDMI out. It is priced at $300 and is set to ship around mid-October.
While the popularity of these new tablets remains to be seen, one thing is certain – the Archos AppsLib for Archos tablets offers a wide range of applications. Popular developers like Google, Adobe, and various third-party developers specialized in multimedia, games, and productivity tools are among the brands available in Archos AppsLib. However, the maturity and number of apps available in Archos AppsLib are yet to be determined.
