In the rapidly evolving world of education, registered training organisations (RTOs) in Australia are gearing up for a significant change. The revised standards, effective from 1st July 2025, place a greater emphasis on digital literacy, making it an essential skill for trainers and educators.

To ensure students possess the foundational skills needed for modern learning and workplace environments, RTOs are now required to assess digital literacy before enrolment. This proactive approach to student preparation is crucial, as highlighted by Brent Kinnane, General Manager at TAFE Queensland, Brisbane.

One company at the forefront of this digital literacy revolution is OneAdvanced, whose Australia distributor TAFE Queensland has expanded its offering to help RTOs meet the new regulations. OneAdvanced's solution, the Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) platform, is among the few Australian government-approved language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) assessment tools.

The BKSB platform is renowned for its use in education institutes across Australia, where it is employed to assess English and maths proficiency before course enrolment. Now, with the introduction of a new digital literacy assessment, BKSB supports RTOs in complying with the new standards.

The BKSB Digital Literacy Module offers a compliant, scalable, and easy-to-implement solution for assessing students' digital capabilities. It provides automated, actionable insights for educators, reducing administrative workloads, while prioritising inclusivity, ensuring tailored support for students irrespective of their initial digital proficiency.

Adam Bowles, Country Manager at OneAdvanced, emphasised the importance of digital literacy, stating that it directly impacts student engagement, completion rates, and employability. By empowering RTOs to quickly and accurately identify digital skill levels, the BKSB solution enables educators to deliver targeted support from day one, significantly improving student outcomes, satisfaction, and workplace readiness.

In line with these changes, RTOs are encouraged to review enrolment processes, integrate digital literacy screening, train educators in digital competency frameworks, and leverage a digital assessment tool like BKSB for smooth compliance with the 2025 RTO Standards.

As we move towards a more digitally-focused future, it's clear that RTOs that proactively embrace these changes will reap the benefits. The BKSB solution, according to both Adam Bowles and Brent Kinnane, ensures compliance and actively improves student readiness and success.
