Talented Violinist Johnny Gandelsman Debuts His Project "This is America" at the Prior Performing Arts Center
The Prior Performing Arts Center in Worcester, Massachusetts, welcomed a diverse range of artists and performances once again last Thursday. Grammy Award-winning violinist and producer Johnny Gandelsman graced the stage, performing excerpts from his magnum opus, This is America.
This is America is a powerful piece inspired by the chaotic events of 2020, consisting of 28 pieces of music composed by 22 diverse American composers. During the performance, Gandelsman showcased several well-received excerpts, including Èbùn Oguntola's "Reflections," Tomeka Reid's "Rhapsody," and Rhiannon Giddens' "New To The Session."
Gandelsman was joined towards the end of the concert by the Worcester Chamber Music Society, a local group of musicians who added a unique touch to the performance with their variety of instruments, including flute and piano.
The concert received mixed to positive reviews among Holy Cross students, staff, the general public, and members of the Worcester community. Some praised the powerful message and emotional impact of the performance, while others appreciated the innovative collaboration between Gandelsman and the Worcester Chamber Music Society.
The Prior Performing Arts Center has a rich history of hosting a variety of artistic events and performances. In addition to hosting Gandelsman, the center has welcomed acts such as Camille A. Brown & Dancers, who performed Turf (2017) and I AM (2024) at the venue.
Upcoming events at the Prior Performing Arts Center include performances by poet Aimee Nezhukumatathil, jazz musician Mike Monaghan, the Holy Cross College Choir, and another performance by Camille A. Brown & Dancers. The center will also welcome Jeffrey de Caen as the Nancy Savage Director on June 1, 2025.
In an interesting twist, it was revealed that Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) was the musician behind Gandelsman's soloist performance. The Prior Performing Arts Center continues to attract renowned artists and provide a platform for diverse and thought-provoking performances.
