"Taxi services for parents in Offenbach facing sweet or bitter financial implications"
In the heart of Offenbach, the city's annual Traffic Safety Week took place, organised by the municipal authority to promote awareness about safe school routes. This year marked the twelfth time the event has been carried out as part of the municipal prevention work.
Nine elementary and special needs schools in Offenbach participated in the 2024 Traffic Safety Week, with Eichendorff School, Friedrich-Ebert School, and Wildbach School in the Hainbach Valley lending their support. The event aimed to emphasise the importance of safe school routes and encourage responsible behaviour from parents, particularly those driving taxis.
The city police were present, intervening only when necessary during the event. Stricter controls and harsher penalties for traffic-disrupting parent taxis will be implemented in the future, according to Frank Weber, head of the municipal authority. He commended the impact of the Traffic Safety Week, stating that children with self-designed signs, smileys, and hearts draw attention from road users to their parents' misbehavior.
Parents who parked illegally or caused traffic congestion received sour lemons as a reminder of the rules. However, those who followed traffic rules or walked their children to school were rewarded with handmade hearts and chocolate. Councilor Paul-Gerhard Weiß highlighted the convenience of walking to schools in the city center.
The event was a success, with parents who were previously unaware of their behaviour showcasing understanding and being impressed by the strong presence of children, teachers, parents, and law enforcement on the streets during the Traffic Safety Week. Despite three uncooperative parents causing discussions, the majority of parents recognised the importance of the event and made a conscious effort to improve their behaviour.
Frank Weber also announced that in the future, stricter measures will be implemented to ensure the safety of children on their way to and from school. With the success of the 2024 Traffic Safety Week, Offenbach continues to prioritise the safety of its children and the promotion of responsible driving habits among parents.
