Tech Giants Facing Regulation in Financial Transactions
WhatsApp Pay's Temporary Suspension in Brazil: A Shift in Regulatory Winds
WhatsApp Pay, the digital payment service offered by Facebook, has encountered a setback in Brazil, one of its largest markets with 120 million users. The Central Bank of Brazil suspended the service in 2020, marking a potential change in the regulatory landscape for the payments sector.
The decision was made due to concerns about WhatsApp Pay's compliance with local financial regulations. Mastercard and Visa were prohibited from carrying out payments and transfers to WhatsApp Pay, making the system inoperable. Cade, Brazil's antitrust authority, also suspended WhatsApp's partnership with payment processor Cielo.
This suspension indicates that decisions regarding domestic P2P offerings will be subject to increased scrutiny. For now, entering the cross-border space for these services seems to be a distant prospect.
Facebook has been focusing on big emerging economies with less developed payment systems and large underbanked populations. The launch of WhatsApp Pay in Brazil was a strategic move, as the Reserve Bank of India hasn't provided regulatory approval for a country-wide rollout yet.
Despite the setback, payments remain a significant opportunity for big tech. However, there have been no major breakthroughs yet. For instance, Apple's deal with Goldman Sachs is one of the most developed in the tech-payments sector, but the credit cards market is competitive.
The suspension of WhatsApp Pay in Brazil underscores the importance of adhering to local regulations in the rapidly evolving digital payments landscape. As tech companies continue to explore this space, regulatory compliance will likely remain a key challenge.
