Technical Assistance Unit (THW) and German Oil Pipeline Company (TAL) GmbH are under investigation following the pipeline leak emergency.
The Technical Relief Organization (THW) in the Bavarian region recently held an annual oil spill disaster exercise in the Kufstein area, with a focus on optimizing processes between the THW and the Transmission System Operator (TAL).
In the simulated scenario, a pipeline damage in the Kufstein area was posited, which could potentially cause oil to flow towards the Chiemsee. Over a distance of more than two kilometers, THW deployment forces erected oil barriers that float on the water surface and are oil-repellent.
These oil barriers, a crucial part of the THW's response, ensure that oil collects on the water surface, making it easier for deployment forces to pump it off. The THW's efforts aim to secure water and minimize environmental impact.
During the exercise, a new amphibious vehicle was used, which transports oil hoses in the shore area and enables quick, uncomplicated, and environmentally friendly work. This vehicle is a testament to the THW's commitment to adapting and improving its technology for disaster response.
Eight different local associations built containment basins and a SEPCON (Water-Oil Separation Plant) for the oil barriers. The SEPCON, a key tool in the THW's arsenal, is used to separate oil-water mixtures and secure water.
Fabian Kuhn, the Exercise Leadership of the THW in the oil spill exercise scenario, oversaw the operations. The THW, renowned worldwide for its disaster response efforts, provides expertise, technology, and experience in bilateral aid, tasks within the EU's civil protection mechanism, and on behalf of UN organizations.
Good preparation is essential for the THW in emergency situations, and although the pipeline has not yet leaked, the exercise ensures the THW is well-prepared for any eventualities. For more information about the THW's commitment at home and abroad, visit www.jetzt.thw.de.

The public is encouraged to support the THW, a volunteer deployment organization of the federal government with over 85,000 volunteers nationwide, in its mission to protect and serve the community.
