Techniques and Strategies for Managing and Overcoming Challenges
In Germany, the National Decade for Literacy and Basic Education (AlphaDekade), launched in 2016, aims to reduce functional illiteracy among adults and improve basic education levels. The issue is far-reaching, affecting the daily lives of many, particularly men, older individuals, and first-generation immigrants.
According to recent statistics, approximately 10.6 million people aged 16 to 65 in Germany struggle significantly with reading and writing, a figure equivalent to 20% of the adult population. This issue extends beyond the adult population, as a quarter of children cannot read well enough by the end of primary school.
The Foundation for Reading, an organisation dedicated to promoting literacy, believes that reading competence is not a fixed characteristic but the result of various prerequisites. They have developed three life stories to illustrate the biggest problems in learning to read: Emil, Kim, and Farid.
Emil, for instance, struggles with learning to read due to a lack of reading at home or rarely. Farid, a newcomer to Germany, doesn't yet speak the language and faces cultural differences, as well as a lack of targeted support at his school. Kim needs extra support outside of school due to her single mother's lack of support and time, but teachers often lack time and resources.
Early childhood education must be strengthened, and investments in kindergartens and schools significantly increased, according to the political demand of the Foundation for Reading. The organisation notes that migration itself is not the determining factor for low literacy, but rather economic status is crucial.
The Alpha-Mobile, a project under the AlphaDekade, has been used to raise awareness about the issue and offer support at various locations in Germany. Anyone can help with reading promotion as a volunteer reading mentor, according to the Foundation for Reading. They offer free materials and projects for this.
The educational success of children depends heavily on their home environment. Not being able to read and write properly affects daily life, including navigating the complex healthcare system. Being unable to read and write properly makes one more susceptible to fake news and politically disempowered.
Poor reading skills negatively impact job opportunities, self-image, and participation in society. Germany relies on well-educated specialists, and the problem of poor reading and writing skills among adults is expected to grow. The AlphaDekade is funded with approximately 180 million euros until 2026, and Education Minister Karin Prien (CDU) is hoped to continue the AlphaDekade program. However, many projects under the AlphaDekade have ended or are about to.
The issue of poor reading and writing skills is a complex one, but with continued efforts and support, it can be addressed effectively. The Foundation for Reading emphasises that reading competence is not a fixed characteristic but can be improved with the right support and resources.
