Telecommunications sector to introduce cybersecurity structure by 2026, as per the National Cybersecurity Center's plan
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has taken a significant step towards enhancing online safety for telecom consumers by developing a comprehensive cybersecurity framework. This initiative was unveiled at the Commission's second stakeholder meeting on the framework, held recently in Abuja.
The cybersecurity framework, set to take effect in 2026, aims to safeguard digital infrastructure in the telecommunications sector, a critical backbone of Nigeria's digital economy. According to NCC's Executive Commissioner for Technical Services, Abraham Oshadami, the framework is designed to be robust, adaptive, and inclusive, addressing security challenges arising from emerging technologies.
Oshadami also highlighted the increased risks to human safety due to cyber threats. He emphasised the critical risks posed by coordinated cyber and physical attacks on operational technology (OT), particularly in the telecommunications sector. This concern underscores the importance of the cybersecurity framework in ensuring the protection of both digital and physical assets in the sector.
The development of the cybersecurity framework builds on an earlier engagement with industry players, as the NCC advances the process internally with meetings held in Abuja to address cyber threats in the telecom sector. While no specific external organisation has been named as supporting the creation of the framework, the process is being coordinated by the NCC with the involvement of relevant stakeholders and experts.
The framework is expected to address the security challenges posed by emerging technologies, ensuring that the telecommunications sector remains secure in the face of increasing cyber threats. The initiative is a significant step towards safeguarding Nigeria's digital infrastructure and enhancing online safety for telecom consumers.
