Television Chairperson Nasir Uddin is imprisoned following a five-day detention order.
In a significant development, Dhaka court sent Nasir Uddin, Chairman and Managing Director of MyTV, to jail on August 23, 2023. The decision came after a five-day remand in connection with the killing of Asadul Haque Babu during the 2024 July Uprising.
The court's decision was based on a petition that alleged Nasir acted as a supporter of the then Awami League government, opposed the opposition movement, and was directly or indirectly involved in the killing of Asadul Haque Babu. The petition further accused Nasir of spreading propaganda against the anti-discrimination student movement and providing provocative statements.
Asadul Haque Babu was shot and later died in hospital on the same day he participated in a demonstration in the Jatrabari area on 5 August last year during the July Uprising. His father, Zainal Abedin, filed a murder case on 30 August, naming 26 individuals including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Nasir Uddin was associated with the Awami League during the July uprising in 2024. His son, Tawhid Afridi, was listed as the 11th accused in the case.
During Nasir's interrogation, important information and evidence were obtained, which is currently under verification. CID Inspector Khan Md Erfan, the investigating officer of the case, produced Nasir before the court after remand and requested that he be kept in jail.
Defense lawyer Mohammad Khairul Islam sought bail for Nasir, but the court rejected the petition and ordered him to be sent back to jail. Kaiyum Hossain Nayan opposed Nasir's bail petition on behalf of the state, arguing that if released on bail, Nasir could abscond or hamper the investigation.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Rakibul Hasan Ahmed passed the order this afternoon following a hearing. The court's decision marks a significant step in the ongoing investigation into the 2024 July Uprising and the tragic death of Asadul Haque Babu.
