Ten individuals sustained injuries when a bus veered off C-32 highway.
In a shocking turn of events, a bus traveling between Lloret de Mar and Barcelona's El Prat airport plunged off the C-32 highway in Santa Susanna, Maresme, on Sunday. The incident left 10 people injured and caused a significant disruption to traffic.
The bus, carrying around 60 people of different nationalities, was heading towards Barcelona when the accident occurred at kilometer 127.7 of the C-32. Civil Protection has since moved those not taken to hospitals to the Can Xaubet pavilion in Pineda de Mar.
Of the 53 people on board, 10 were injured in the accident. Five people with minor injuries were treated at the Sant Jaume Hospital in Calella, while the driver and a minor were seriously injured and taken to the Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol in Badalona. One person was injured in a less serious condition and taken to the hospital in Mataró. Two more people with minor injuries were also taken to the hospital in Mataró.
The highway in the Barcelona direction was completely closed due to the accident, causing a two-kilometer traffic buildup from Palafolls. However, one lane was later reopened.
The Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's police force, has opened an investigation to determine the causes and circumstances of the accident. The investigation into the accident is being led by the local traffic accident investigation authority.
Santa Susanna's mayor, Joan Campolier, does not believe there is a link between the two incidents, as there was another bus accident on the same stretch of road last July, about 200 meters from Sunday's incident.
Through his Twitter account, the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, wished the injured a "speedy recovery" and praised the work of the emergency services. The emergency services, including 14 fire brigade units, 5 ambulances, two medical helicopters, a joint team from both bodies, and several Mossos d'Esquadra patrols, worked tirelessly at the scene.
SEM has activated its psychological support at the Poliesportiu la Pineda to assist those affected by the accident. The wrecked vehicle remains at the scene, awaiting removal, likely on Monday.
The 112 emergency phone received 18 calls about this accident. Through their diligent efforts, the emergency services ensured that the situation was promptly managed and controlled.
