Tennis Grand Slam: Alcaraz Obliterates Djokovic, Advances to Third Consecutive Major finals in US Open 2025
Young Spanish Star Carlos Alcaraz Advances to US Open Final
Carlos Alcaraz, the 22-year-old Spanish tennis sensation, has secured a spot in the US Open final after an impressive victory over Novak Djokovic. Alcaraz triumphed 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the semifinal match on Friday.
The win marks Alcaraz's second major title at Flushing Meadows, as he seeks to add to his current collection of five major titles. This achievement comes after defeating Jannik Sinner at the French Open in June, but losing to him at Wimbledon in July.
Alcaraz started the match strongly, breaking Djokovic's serve at the beginning. However, he acknowledged that his performance in the semifinal was not his best of the tournament. Despite this, he managed to maintain his composure and outplay his opponent.
Interestingly, Alcaraz chose to receive the serve after winning the coin toss. He wore a pink, sleeveless shirt during the match, and despite facing no break points, Djokovic showed signs of discomfort, flexing or stretching his neck and being looked at by a trainer.
Meanwhile, Djokovic's bid to become the first player in the sport's history to win 25 major titles was blocked yet again. The 38-year-old Serbian reached the semifinals at all four Slams this season but exited in that round each time. Djokovic won the US Open most recently in 2023.
Alcaraz will face either Sinner or Felix Auger-Aliassime for the championship on Sunday. If Sinner wins, he could become the first repeat men's champion in New York since Roger Federer won five years in a row from 2004 through 2008.
In other news, Alcaraz played golf with 2017 Masters champion Sergio Garcia on Wednesday. Garcia, who Alcaraz owes $200 to, was in attendance to support his fellow Spaniard. Alcaraz had a buzz cut for his first-round match but grew out his hair before the semifinal.
The women's final of the US Open saw Aryna Sabalenka face Amanda Anisimova. The outcome of the men's final on Sunday will conclude the 2022 US Open tournament. Alcaraz and Sinner, both 24, have combined to collect the past seven major championships and nine of the last 12.
