Tennis player Auger-Aliassime withdraws from the competition.
Félix Auger-Aliassime, the 27th-ranked tennis player in the ATP, has withdrawn from the Davis Cup playoff match scheduled for September 12-13 in Halifax. The withdrawal comes after a grueling summer tennis season that has taken a toll on the Canadian player.
Auger-Aliassime had a remarkable run at the US Open, defeating Alexander Zverev (third seed), Alex de Minaur (eighth seed), and Andrey Rublev (15th seed) on his way to the quarterfinals. However, his journey ended in the semifinals, where he lost to Jannik Sinner in four sets.
The long and demanding summer season has taken its toll on Auger-Aliassime, both physically and mentally. Frank Dancevic, captain of the Canadian Davis Cup team, understands the need for the young player to rest and recover.
"Félix had an incredible run at the US Open and we are all proud of his accomplishments," Dancevic said. "However, it's clear that the summer season has been long and demanding for him, and he needs to take some time to rest and recover."
In his absence, Denis Shapovalov will replace Auger-Aliassime for Canada in the Davis Cup tournament in Halifax. The Canadian Davis Cup team, which will be represented by Gabriel Diallo (Montreal), Liam Draxl (Newmarket), Alexis Galarneau (Laval), and Cleeve Harper (Calgary) at the Scotiabank Centre, remains confident in their ability to compete well.
Auger-Aliassime expressed his gratitude to his fans for their support during the US Open and expressed optimism about future good moments with the team. "I'm sure we'll have many more good moments and I'm already looking forward to rejoining the team," he said.
He also wished his teammates good luck and expressed his cherished moments of defending his country's colours and playing the Davis Cup. "I wish my teammates the best of luck in the upcoming Davis Cup playoff match," he said. "Playing for my country and representing Canada in the Davis Cup is always a special moment for me."
Despite Auger-Aliassime's withdrawal, Dancevic acknowledges the inspiration provided by the young player's run in the US Open. "Félix's run in the US Open has been an inspiration to us all," Dancevic said. "We will carry that inspiration with us as we prepare for the Davis Cup playoff match next week."
