Tennis player Zverev encounters another setback at a Grand Slam tournament.
In a disappointing turn of events, Alexander Zverev's quest for a Grand Slam title has been postponed to the next season. The German number one was eliminated in the third round of the US Open, losing to Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in a gruelling four-set match.
The match, which lasted 3 hours and 48 minutes, saw Zverev struggle from the start. His serve was broken at the start of the third set, and he could not break Auger-Aliassime's serve again after the first set. Zverev's back, which has been causing him problems for weeks, seemed to take a toll on his performance.
Despite having a chance to lead 2:0 in sets, Zverev failed to convert a set point and the match took a turn for the worse. A net cord helped Auger-Aliassime to level the set, and from there, the Canadian took control. After losing his serve to trail 3:4 in the fourth set, Zverev found no way back.
Zverev's passive play in crucial moments allowed Auger-Aliassime to take the initiative. The final statistics showed 50 direct winning shots for Auger-Aliassime compared to Zverev's 29. Zverev showed few positive reactions and looked more and more helpless as the match progressed. At one point, he even got frustrated and threw his racket to the ground.
Meanwhile, qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff is the only remaining German in the singles competition. Struff played Novak Djokovic in the round of the last 16 (Achtelfinale) and will face the Serbian record Grand Slam champion on Monday.
Elsewhere, Daniel Altmaier had to retire against the Australian Alex de Minaur due to thigh problems, and Laura Siegemund suffered a 0:6, 1:6 defeat against the Russian Jekaterina Alexandrova.
In a post-match interview, Zverev reported that his back issue is not muscular and it won't go away in the next two weeks. Zverev took a short break and left the Louis Armstrong Stadium, leaving fans and pundits alike to wonder what could have been.
As Zverev heads into the off-season, he will no doubt be reflecting on a disappointing US Open campaign and looking to bounce back next year. With his talent and determination, it's likely that we'll see him back in the Grand Slam mix soon.
