Tesla climbs to become the second most popular car brand in Turkey due to a significant increase in August sales
Tesla Dominates Turkey's Electric Vehicle Market
In a remarkable turn of events, Tesla has made a significant impact on Turkey's automotive industry, particularly in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. The American electric vehicle manufacturer has seen a staggering 86% surge in deliveries during August, selling over 8,730 Model Y vehicles.
This strong performance has allowed Tesla to capture nearly half of Turkey's EV market, making it the second-best-selling car brand in the country, behind only Renault. The surge in sales highlights the strength of Tesla's strategy in Turkey's EV market.
The growth in demand for battery-powered vehicles in Turkey is a key factor contributing to Tesla's success. In fact, the EV market in Turkey has grown from 8% of total auto sales last year to approximately 20% this summer. Government incentives and consumer preferences shifting towards electric vehicles are also playing a significant role in this growth.
Tesla's Model Y, the only Tesla model officially sold in Turkey, benefits from being taxed at the lowest bracket under Turkey's Special Consumption Tax (SCT) system. The company has strategically limited the power output of the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) to 160kW to qualify for the lowest bracket, providing a significant edge over combustion engine rivals and some competing EVs.
This strategy is similar to what Tesla did in Canada to get the base Model 3 to qualify for a $5,000 federal incentive, allowing other Model 3 trims to also qualify for the rebate. The strategy seems to be paying off, as Tesla has delivered roughly 26,000 cars in Turkey from January through August, four times higher than the same period last year.
Tesla's success in Turkey has been so significant that it has surpassed household names such as Fiat, Volkswagen, Toyota, and Hyundai in monthly sales. The company's climb to the nation's second-largest auto brand overall is a testament to its growing popularity and the appeal of electric vehicles in Turkey.
Despite Renault's continued dominance with higher monthly sales than Tesla, the gap is narrowing. It's an exciting time for Turkey's automotive industry, with electric vehicles playing an increasingly important role. As Tesla continues to innovate and adapt its strategies to local markets, it's clear that the company will remain a major player in Turkey's EV market.
