Tesla Expands Austin Robotaxi Service and Eyes Chicago

In a significant move, Tesla has secured a rideshare license in Texas and expanded the service area of its Robotaxi pilot in Austin. The latest update sees the geofence covering a vast 173 square miles, making it over 90% larger than Waymo's geofence in the same city.

The Austin geofence, which was initially 18 square miles, has undergone three expansions since Tesla launched its Robotaxi program there. This latest expansion, effective from September 1, marks a nearly tenfold increase in the coverage area.

Tesla is adding more Model Y Robotaxis to meet the growing demand as it scales in Austin. Simultaneously, the company has increased the number of vehicles in its Austin Robotaxi fleet by 50% to accommodate the service's physical expansion.

The aggressive push into autonomous mobility is highlighted by Tesla's rapid geofence growth in Austin. This gives Tesla regulatory approval to operate its Robotaxi fleet under the state's new autonomous rideshare laws.

Beyond Austin, Tesla is considering expanding its Robotaxi service to additional U.S. cities, potentially including Chicago. Recent job postings suggest Chicago could be one of the next markets where Tesla will roll out its Robotaxi service.

Tesla has announced plans to expand its robotaxi service to New York City and is currently running limited services in Austin, Texas, and the San Francisco Bay Area. The company aims to potentially cover around half of the US population by the end of 2025.

As Tesla lays the groundwork for its driverless service to open to the general public in Austin next month, the electric vehicle giant continues to push the boundaries of autonomous mobility.
