Tesla Introduces Battery Health Test for Owners

Tesla has made it easier for owners to understand their vehicle's battery health with the introduction of a Battery Health Test in its latest software update, 2025.8.3. Previously, understanding battery health required a diagnostic from Tesla or a third-party shop.

The Battery Health Test is now accessible via the main user interface, under Controls > Service > Battery Health. This test measures battery health and energy retention, providing Tesla owners with direct insight into their vehicle's battery health.

The test recalibrates the battery management system (BMS) and may affect the displayed range. After the battery health test, the range estimate displayed in the vehicle may be recalibrated, giving a more accurate reading of remaining range.

It's important to note that the deviation in displayed range is more due to changes in driving habits and environmental conditions than a distinct change in the battery's overall health.

The battery health test requires the vehicle to remain connected to an AC charger for up to 16 hours to complete the diagnostic. During this time, the energy estimate in the Energy app will be recalibrated, accounting for the vehicle's usage characteristics and adjusting over time.

The Energy app now displays the last 10, 100, or 200 miles (15, 150, or 300 kilometers) of energy usage history. Users can also clear their energy usage history in the app if needed.

The Tesla referral link provides three months of Full Self-Driving (FSD) for new Tesla buyers, if used.

It's worth mentioning that this software update includes important security fixes and improvements. The name of the first Tesla owner who conducted the battery health check with this software update has not been publicly disclosed.

The concern about Tesla battery health often arises when the displayed range deviates from the advertised range. However, it's crucial to remember that the Energy app's battery energy estimate does not change the total available battery energy.

In conclusion, the Battery Health Test is a significant step forward in helping Tesla owners understand their vehicle's battery health, making it easier to maintain and care for their electric vehicles.
