Tesla is set to construct a Research and Development (R&D) facility in Berlin, located close to its Grünheide Gigafactory in Germany.

Tesla Chooses Berlin-Köpenick for European Development Centre

In a significant development for the electric vehicle industry, Tesla has announced that its European development centre for electric vehicles and batteries will be located in an old factory in Berlin-Köpenick. The decision follows a competitive selection process, with Tesla evaluating over three dozen potential locations before making its choice.

The exact location within Berlin-Köpenick has not yet been revealed, but applications for the renovation of the old factory have already been submitted, and work will begin as soon as they are approved. Initially, around 130 engineers currently working in the Gigafactory in Grünheide and at smaller sites in Berlin will move into the new centre.

Berlin-Köpenick, approximately ten kilometers east of the Brandenburg town of Grünheide, will be the new home to up to 250 employees in the future. The focus of work at Tesla's Berlin-Köpenick centre will be on electric vehicles, battery technology, and charging infrastructure.

Mayor Igel of Treptow-Köpenick, the district where the development centre will be located, stated that the decision followed months of confidential talks with the company. He went on to say that the settlement is a great success for Berlin, and the district stood out against other international locations in the selection process.

Lars Moravy, Vice President for Vehicle Development at Tesla, announced the location of the centre on Wednesday evening. He did not disclose the exact location before the company does, but he did mention that there are currently 20,000 square meters of halls available, and further expansion is possible.

It was not certain for a while that the Europe centre for Tesla R&D would indeed come to Berlin. Initial technical tests at the Tesla development centre in Berlin-Köpenick may commence this year or in 2026. The current article does not provide information about the timeline for the expansion of the Tesla development centre's workforce beyond 250 employees.

The choice of Berlin-Köpenick as the location for Tesla's development centre is a significant boost for the city and the electric vehicle industry. With further expansion possible, it is an exciting time for the future of electric vehicles in Berlin-Köpenick.
