Tesla plans for a refresh of the Model S and Model X vehicles, slated for the end of 2025.
Tesla Announces Updates for Model S and Model X
Tesla, the pioneering electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has announced plans for a refresh of its flagship vehicles, the Model S and Model X, in late 2025. This news comes amidst speculations about the future of these iconic vehicles, which have seen a decline in sales in recent quarters.
The Model S and Model X, first introduced in 2012 and 2015 respectively, have been a significant part of Tesla's journey. The Model S, in particular, became an instant hit and solidified Tesla's status as a serious automaker. Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, once described the Model X as the "Faberge Egg" of cars.
The unique Falcon Wing doors of the Model X have been a standout feature since its launch. In the second half of 2025, these vehicles are expected to receive a software update (2025.32) that brings several improvements. The update includes the introduction of a new "Low-Power-Mode" to reduce energy consumption while the car is parked, enhancements in battery range calculation by considering battery aging, and a new thermal control panel for better diagnosis and control of thermal components in the vehicle.
Lars Moravy, Tesla's VP of Vehicle Engineering, hinted at these changes in a recent episode of the Ride the Lightning podcast. Additionally, the Model S and Model X are expected to receive a front bumper cam, a feature that was expected to be added last year, and possibly interior ambient lighting.
Despite the dropping sales, the Model S and Model X continue to hold a significant impact on Tesla's brand image. They often represent the pinnacle of Tesla's technological prowess and design philosophy. Contrary to rumours, Tesla has no plans to discontinue these vehicles as of the information provided.
In 2021, Tesla rolled out a significant refresh for the Model S and Model X, which included design changes and controversial features like a yoke steering wheel and the removal of turn signal and gear stalks. The upcoming refresh in 2025 promises to build upon these changes, ensuring that the Model S and Model X remain at the forefront of Tesla's innovation.
With these updates, Tesla aims to reaffirm its commitment to its flagship vehicles and maintain their position as symbols of the company's technological advancements and design philosophy. Sales estimates suggest that around 10,000 or less of these vehicles are sold per quarter, but with these upcoming improvements, Tesla hopes to attract more customers and continue its mission to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy.
