Tesla resists substantial tax increase in Turkey, as August sales reach record highs
In the bustling automotive landscape of Turkey, electric vehicles (EVs) are making a significant impact. The first eight months of the year saw a 7.24% increase in overall automobile and light commercial vehicle sales, reaching 817,345 units, with EVs playing a prominent role.
Surging Demand for Lower-Taxed Vehicles
Lower-taxed small and mid-sized vehicles dominated the demand, with the A, B, and C segments accounting for nearly 82% of total sales. Consumers advanced their purchases to August to avoid the expected tax impact, contributing to a surge in sales.
SUVs Leading the Charge
Sport utility vehicles (SUVs) continued to lead consumer preferences, capturing 62.8% of sales. In fact, SUV sales amounted to 410,891 units during the same period.
Tesla's Rise and Competition
Tesla, the American EV giant, became Turkey's top European market for the first time in August, due to faster deliveries and tax-driven demand. Over the first eight months of the year, Tesla led the Turkish EV market with 25,756 sales, representing a 21.5% share.
However, Tesla's dominance is not without competition. Chinese manufacturers, such as BYD, have been positioning themselves as formidable rivals. In August, BYD recorded 13,391 sales in Turkey, with an 11.2% share.
Price Increases and the Impact of Tax Changes
The revised Special Consumption Tax (SCT) on electric vehicles in Turkey increased the lowest rate from 10% to 25% in June. This tax increase led to retail prices for electric vehicles increasing by between 10% and 20%. Tesla, Togg, and other leading EV makers added further price hikes on top of the tax increase.
The Togg T10X, a popular model, saw the largest price increase among the best-selling models at 29.31%. BYD's Seal U and Atto 3 models saw price increases of 24.84% and 13.57% respectively, while Tesla's Model Y saw a price increase of 20.08%.
The Role of Togg
Togg, a Turkish EV manufacturer, followed Tesla with 21,070 units and an overall 17.6% share in the Turkish EV market over the same period. However, the upcoming sedan model from Togg slowed demand in August.
Light Commercial Vehicle Sales
Light commercial vehicle sales in Turkey grew 4.1% to 162,932 units, indicating a growing interest in electric commercial vehicles as well.
A Shifting Landscape
The Turkish EV market is witnessing a dynamic shift, with Tesla, BYD, and Togg leading the charge. The first half of 2022 saw Chinese manufacturers like BYD, which dominates the electric car market with strong growth and a wide range of models, posing direct competition to Tesla in Turkey and globally.
This competitive landscape is set to continue, with consumers in Turkey showing a growing preference for electric vehicles amidst the changing tax landscape.
