Tesla Unveils Autonomous Vehicles and Humanoid Robot at "We, Robot" Event

Tesla, the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer led by CEO Elon Musk, made several exciting announcements at its recent "We, Robot" event. The event saw the unveiling of a two-seater autonomous vehicle named the Cybercab, a humanoid robot named Optimus, and a prototype of a robot taxi called the Robovan.

The Cybercab, designed for ample luggage space, is set to be produced in "very high volume," making autonomous taxi rides cheaper than today's bus fares. Musk revealed that the truly autonomous Tesla electric car will be available for purchase by regular customers, with an expected price of under $30,000. Remarkably, all Tesla cars currently in production will be capable of achieving unsupervised autonomous driving.

Musk also spoke about the potential of humanoid robots at Tesla, with Optimus being offered for 20,000 to 30,000 dollars, cheaper than a car. Optimus, first shown in 2022, is expected to usher in an "age of abundance" and contribute around 80% of Tesla's future value. Musk plans to deploy Optimus units in Tesla factories by the end of 2025, with a goal of producing 5,000 to 10,000 units in 2025, increasing to 50,000 to 100,000 units in 2026.

The Robovan, resembling the Model Y and featuring a smooth rear and metallic color reminiscent of the Cybertruck, is designed for autonomous electric car transport for multiple passengers. Although no specific timeline was provided, Musk mentioned that a larger autonomous Tesla vehicle for up to 20 passengers will be added at an unspecified time.

During the event, several Optimus robots performed dance movements and served drinks, demonstrating the robot's potential capabilities. Tesla also provided a total of 50 autonomous cars for visitors to move around the studio grounds, including 21 of the new robotaxis.

Musk emphasised that no expensive technology is needed for the Robovan's autonomy, and it will be charged without cables. The production cost of the Cybercab, including taxes, is estimated to be 30-40 cents per mile.

The first states for the implementation of unsupervised autonomous driving in Tesla cars are expected to be Texas and California. While no further information was provided about the technical underpinnings for the upcoming robotaxis or the conventional Tesla program, Musk's vision for the future of transportation and robotics is undeniably ambitious and exciting.

As Musk arrived in a new vehicle named "Cybercab" at the event, it's clear that Tesla is pushing the boundaries of what's possible in the realm of autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots. With Optimus, the Robovan, and the Cybercab, Tesla is shaping the future of transportation and robotics, and it's an exciting time to be a part of this journey.
