Tesla's Autopark feature engaged domestically through homemade duct tape guidelines (VIDEO)
Tesla is preparing for its next big step in autonomous driving technology with the upcoming release of FSD 14. The latest software update, currently undergoing internal testing at Tesla, is being led by CEO Elon Musk and described as the second biggest update since version 12.
In a demonstration, FSD 14 was shown stopping at a park toll booth with no physical gate, waiting for passengers to complete their payment, and then driving off naturally. This impressive display showcases the software's ability to understand and respond to complex, real-world scenarios.
However, not all features of the FSD software are infallible. Previous testing has revealed an issue with the Autopark feature, which lets a Tesla automatically maneuver into parallel or perpendicular parking spaces on public roads. In a 2018 Model 3 equipped with Hardware 3 and FSD 12.6.4, Autopark failed to recognize a DIY parking space.
This issue was also observed in a 2018 video uploaded by Tesla owner Emmanuel Huna, where the Autopark feature was tricked into recognizing a parking spot using white duct tape. However, the latest videos demonstrate the Autopark feature being successfully triggered in a 2024 Cybertruck and a 2024 Model Y, both running FSD version 13.2.8 on Hardware 4 (AI4).
Elon Musk has high hopes for FSD 14, stating that it "feels sentient" and will be two to three times safer and better than a human driver. He believes that the update will significantly improve the capabilities of Tesla's autonomous driving technology, making it even more reliable and efficient.
If testing stays on track, Tesla could begin rolling out FSD 14 as soon as next month. It remains to be seen how the software will perform in real-world scenarios, but the demonstration of the park toll booth scenario suggests that Tesla is making strides towards achieving fully autonomous driving.
