Test drive resumes: Kaiserwagen back in motion

The historic imperial carriage of the suspension railway is currently being prepared for reopening in the workshop in Vohwinkel, as part of the city's public transport company (WSW)'s efforts to restore the carriage for the 125th anniversary of the cable car in 2026.

Since mid-June, the technical prerequisites have been created inside the workshop for the imperial carriage. On Friday, the carriage set off to Oberbarmen for a test run, the first time in a long time it had done so. However, the test revealed unexpected damage to the existing undercarriages, necessitating a complete renewal of the undercarriage frame, motor housings, and other attachments.

The renovation of the imperial carriage faced challenges, requiring new parts for the undercarriage. Unfortunately, the first attempt for new wheels failed due to quality defects from the commissioned company. These issues have since been rectified.

The test was deliberately scheduled for the phase after the evening operation on Friday, and was conducted under the supervision of suspension railway operations manager Christian Kindinger. Only WSW employees and media representatives had access to the station in Vohwinkel during the test. Pictures were taken during the test, but media representatives were not allowed to join the journey for organisational and safety reasons.

The city's public transport company (WSW) is responsible for the maintenance operation of the cable car, and is also involved in the restoration of the historic Kaiserkarussell. The head of the company responsible for this operation is not publicly specified in available sources.

The goal is to return the imperial carriage to the track during the suspension railway anniversary in 2026, marking the 50th anniversary of the first ride of the 1976 restored historic vehicle. The results of the test will be evaluated afterwards to ensure the carriage is ready for its return to service.
