Test of allegiance demonstrated: Former Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer dons South Carolina black in honor of his son
Former Virginia Tech Coach Frank Beamer Returns for Emotional Reunion
Frank Beamer, the legendary coaching great who led Virginia Tech to 23 consecutive bowl invitations and a spot in the College Football Hall of Fame, returned to Lane Stadium for the Hokies' season-opener against his son's team, South Carolina.
Upon his introduction before the game, Beamer drew a loud ovation from the passionate Hokie faithful. After the game, which resulted in a 24-11 loss for Virginia Tech, Beamer was seen wearing Gamecocks black, sharing a heartfelt embrace with his son's successor, Shane Beamer, on the field.
Shane Beamer, who understands the history and traditions of Virginia Tech's program, acknowledged that the game was expected to be a battle. His team, however, managed to score a decisive touchdown in the fourth quarter, an 80-yard punt return attributed to Vicari Swain.
Despite the loss, Shane Beamer expressed respect for Virginia Tech's program and complimented Brent Pry's team. He also believed that Pry is the right coach for Virginia Tech and expected the Hokies to win a lot of games this season.
Brent Pry, who was previously the head coach at Virginia Tech, expected Frank Beamer to support his son. He stated that Beamer loves Virginia Tech a lot but loves his son first. At the ACC Football Kickoff last month, Pry was asked about the game being referred to as the "Beamer Bowl" testing Frank Beamer's conflicting loyalties.
In the end, the emotional reunion between father and son was a poignant reminder of the deep-rooted history between the two programs. Frank Beamer coached Virginia Tech for 29 years and won 238 games, leading the Hokies to the 1999 national championship. His impact on the program and the sport will continue to be felt for years to come.
The Hokies will look to bounce back from their opening loss when they face Old Dominion next week, while Shane Beamer and South Carolina will aim to continue their winning streak against Furman.
