"Tharoor Advises Caution in Altering India-US Relations towards Trump's Tone"
India-US relations have been under the spotlight recently, with Congress MP Shashi Tharoor advocating for "serious repair work" between the two nations. Tharoor's comments come amidst discussions about India's decision to purchase Russian oil and the potential impact on the India-US relationship.
Tharoor claimed that previous American administrations encouraged India to purchase Russian oil to stabilise oil prices. He emphasised that India acted in a very mature manner regarding its trade relations with Russia, asserting that India is a sovereign nation and can take its own decisions.
The MP also disagreed with any notion that India has anything to say sorry for regarding its trade relations with Russia. He argued that India does less in terms of oil and gas trade with Russia compared to countries like China, Turkey, and Europe. Tharoor defended India's oil imports from Russia, stating that other countries engage more extensively and that sovereign choices must be respected.
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick made remarks about India's trade relations with Russia, suggesting that New Delhi may return to the table to strike a deal with Washington in the coming months. Despite India maintaining a firm position on continuing oil trade with Russia, Lutnick's comments indicate a potential thaw in the tensions.
PM Modi has also weighed in on the matter, stating that India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership. His comments were met with a warm response from President Trump, who described the India-US relationship as a "very special relationship."
Trump's comments were not lost on Tharoor, who welcomed a new tone in the India-US relationship but expressed caution due to the repercussions Indians have faced. He disagreed with Rahul Gandhi over Trump's 'dead economy' remarks, suggesting that the effects of Trump's tariffs on the populace were not entirely forgettable.
Despite the challenges, Trump reassured the public, stating that there is "nothing to worry about" and that he and Prime Minister Modi will always be friends. This statement was met with relief, as the India-US relationship is crucial for both nations' economic and political interests.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the India-US relationship will develop in the coming months. However, one thing is certain: MP Shashi Tharoor will continue to be a vocal advocate for India's interests and a bridge between the two nations.
