The 20th Stela of FlingerPath is positioned on Ronsdorfer Street
In the heart of Düsseldorf, nestled among bustling streets and modern architecture, lies a rich industrial history waiting to be explored. This history is brought to life through the Flinger Path, a district tour with 30 stations that delves into the story of industrialization in the city.
One of the key stops on this tour is the former DREW plant, founded by the Poensgen family in 1872 as their second plant in Düsseldorf. Although specific details about the founding of the Düsseldorfer Tube- und Stahlwerke, which later became DREW, are not directly detailed in available sources, it is known that the plant was initially a steam brickworks before shifting to quartz sand mining. The plant, which was the only producer of such tubes on the entire continent at its peak, was closed in 1987 due to overcapacities on the world market.
The 20th station of the Flinger Path was inaugurated on March 14, and it is located at Ronsdorfer Straße 134, in front of the steelworks. A stele at this station is dedicated to the tube works, originally named DREW. The steelworks, though located in the district of Lierenfeld, barely straddles the border with Flingern.
The Flinger Path offers a variety of tours, each providing insights into different aspects of the district's history. Tour 1, "Flingern South - Between Steel Industry and House Occupation," starts at Fichtenstraße and informs about various historical aspects including the former wire industry, forced labor camp Otto, and the boiler works. This tour ends in a former soap factory. Registration for the tours is necessary via email to [email protected].
Another tour, Tour 2, "From Lierenfelder Station to the Old Paint Factories," starts at Langebergerstr. 9 - Tor 3 and visits the World Art Room, Mannesmann tube factory, and Klöckner steel trade. The tour ends with a coffee in a roastery in Hall 31. This tour takes place on September 14, 2025, at 2:00 PM (Heritage Day) and September 20, 2025, at 2:00 PM.
Tour 3, "Flingern North - From Flinger Broich to the Clock Tower," starts at an old crane factory and informs about various historical aspects including the "Wochnerinnen-Asyl" and an old still existing farm, the Kürtenhof. The tour ends at the clock tower of Haniel & Lueg. The tour takes place on April 13, 2025, at 2:00 PM and June 21, 2025, at 2:00 PM.
The monument on Ronsdorfer Straße was funded with the help of the district representation 8 and the citizen initiative Flingern e.V. Kaspar Michels from Flinger Pfad is conducting conversations with interested parties.
Join these tours to step back in time and witness the transformation of Düsseldorf from a hub of industrial innovation to the vibrant city it is today.
