In the realm of German tourism, some destinations stand out as popular favourites among both locals and visitors. Here's a look at the tourist density and rankings of some notable cities and regions across the country.

Starting with the highest tourist density, Frankfurt am Main, a large German city, boasts an impressive 8.3 guests per resident. Following closely behind is Berlin, with a density of 3.3 tourists per resident, despite having the highest absolute number of tourists.

In 2024, Berlin recorded approximately 12.7 million guest arrivals, a significant figure that, however, does not quite match Frankfurt's density. Munich, another major city, ranks lower in terms of density with 6.1 guest nights per inhabitant.

Among the German states, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Lower Saxony are tied for the most frequent appearances in the top 10 of tourism hotspots. Kühlungsborn in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, for instance, has a tourist density of 51.88, making it one of the most densely populated tourist destinations in the country. Heringsdorf on Usedom, also in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, has a tourist density of just under 70 guests per resident. Binz on Rügen, another popular destination in the same state, has a density of around 75 guests per resident.

Lower Saxony, too, has several tourist hotspots. Norderney, a coastal island, has a density of 49.72, while Braunlage, a mountain resort, has a density of 43.18. Bispingen, another Lower Saxony destination, has a density of 50.06.

Bavaria, another popular tourist destination, has two places in the top 10. Oberstdorf, a mountain resort, has a density of 43.55, while Willingen, a ski resort in Hesse, has a density of 61.67.

Two cities in particular have managed to secure a place in the top 10 for their respective states: Rust in Baden-Württemberg, home to Germany's largest and most popular theme park, the Europa-Park, has a tourist density of 198 guests per resident, and Binz on Rügen ranks 17th in absolute numbers with 862,000 guest arrivals. Among large German cities, Rostock ranks 9th in tourist density.

This comparative analysis provides a snapshot of the tourist density and rankings of various German destinations. Whether it's the bustling cities, coastal islands, or mountain resorts, Germany offers a diverse range of tourist hotspots that cater to various preferences and interests.
