"The British Government asserts that Israel is not perpetrating a genocide in the Gaza region"
In an unexpected move, the UK government has decided to excuse parts of the F-35 fighter jet made in Britain from the suspension of 30 arms export licences to Israel, which were imposed last September.
The decision comes in response to a letter sent by David Lammy, Labour MP and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, addressing the UK's supplying of parts for the F-35 jets that have been delivered to Israel.
Despite suspending some licences over fears British-made weaponry was being used to violate international law, the jet parts were exempted as they were part of a wider NATO defence programme.
The government's decision, however, does not imply an official confirmation that there is no ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip. The Foreign Office has conducted numerous assessments on the question of genocide in Israel, but no such statement has been officially made by any UK government representative on September 3, 2025.
Mr. Lammy, in his letter, expressed his concern over Israel's actions, stating they were "utterly appalling" due to the "extensive destruction" and high number of civilian fatalities. He urged Israel to do more to prevent and alleviate the suffering caused by the conflict.
The letter was sent in response to Sarah Champion, chair of the international development committee. The Daily Mail has approached David Lammy, the Foreign Office, and No 10 Downing Street for comment.
It is important to note that the UK government's decision does not signal a change in its stance towards the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip. The UK continues to call for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and adherence to international law.
