The horror genre continued to captivate audiences this week, as "The Conjuring: Last Rites," produced by Warner Bros., claimed the top spot at the North American box office with an impressive $83 million in ticket sales. The film, featuring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprising their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren, has been hailed as a "smash" by analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research.
In second place, Disney's film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical "Hamilton" earned an impressive $10 million. The musical, which tells the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton, has been a cultural phenomenon since its premiere in 2015.
Meanwhile, a number of other films also made a strong showing at the box office. "Weapons," a buzzing horror flick, came in third place with $5.4 million in ticket sales. The film, which has already made a total of $143 million in the United States and Canada, and an additional $108 million abroad, has been a hit with audiences.
Disney's "Freakier Friday," the sequel to the 2003 body-swapping family film, finished in fourth place with $3.8 million in ticket sales. The film, which stars Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, who reprise their roles from the original film, has been well-received by audiences.
The romantic drama "The Roses" earned $2.8 million, while "And Caught Stealing," a crime film starring Austin Butler and Zoe Kravitz, dropped to fifth place with $3.2 million in ticket sales.
Elsewhere, "Light of the World," a film of unknown genre, made $2.4 million. "The Bad Guys 2," an animated film, made $2.5 million, and "The Fantastic Four: First Steps," a superhero film, made $2.75 million.
Interestingly, despite being available on Disney+'s streaming service in 2020, the film "Superman," of unknown genre or type, made $1 million, according to David A. Gross, who described the ticket sales as an "excellent number."
As the summer movie season continues, it will be fascinating to see which films continue to capture audiences' attention and dominate the box office.
