The development of web design: Transitioning from flat layouts to immersive virtual environments
In the ever-evolving world of web design, a shift towards creating emotionally intelligent, strategically led, and engaging digital spaces has taken centre stage. This transformation is beautifully exemplified by ISI Global, a company renowned for crafting immersive physical brand experiences.
Previously, ISI Global's digital presence didn't quite reflect their creative flair. However, with a recent redesign, their online world now mirrors the same sense of craft, energy, and immersive storytelling that they bring to life in the real world.
The goal of this new web design was to build an emotional connection by creating smooth flows, intentional interactions, and visuals that echo the brand's tone in motion. Gone are the days of flat design, which while emphasizing simplicity, function, and mobile-friendliness, became formulaic as brands used the same icon packs and backgrounds.
Instead, a new wave of web design emerged in the late 2010s, prioritising experience over layout and using interactivity to guide users and signal brand personality. This shift included the use of animations, 3D graphics, WebGL, scroll-triggered transitions, and hover states that respond like muscle memory.
ISI Global's redesigned website showcases this evolution, featuring an editorial-inspired platform that feels just as experiential as the environments ISI Global creates. Modular layouts showcase the breadth of their offering, backed by a flexible CMS that gives their team full control.
Thoughtful motion adds a tactile feel to the journey, making every interaction deliberate and polished. Scroll-triggered animations play a key role in guiding users through the site intuitively. An elevated design system ties it all together, with a sophisticated, modern, and globally-minded aesthetic.
The UPP website, built by the partnering agency, is another example of immersive design done right, featuring cinematic storytelling, game-inspired UX, and a custom backend. Similarly, the Incentive Games website, reimagined by the same agency, features playful 3D elements, microinteractions, and a future-proof CMS to empower their team to scale and iterate without bottlenecks.
Whether a brand is a VFX powerhouse or a high-growth B2B company, the brief is the same: create a digital space that doesn't just look good, but feels right. Users want brands to show who they are, not just say it. They're looking for intuitive user journeys, visual storytelling rooted in personality, and interactive moments that feel considered.
As we move forward, it's clear that the future of web design will continue to be shaped by these principles, ensuring that digital spaces not only look beautiful but also feel like an extension of the brand's personality, guiding users through an immersive and memorable experience.
