Dornmühlenbach in Rödinghausen Undergoes Near-Natural Evolution

The Dornmühlenbach in Rödinghausen has undergone significant natural growth and development.

In the districts of Minden-Lübbecke and Herford, a significant collaborative project is underway to restore the natural conditions of the Dornmühlenbach. Eighteen cooperation partners are working together on this endeavour, which is being spearheaded by the Lippeverband.

The project, part of the Water Development Project Weser-Werre-Else (WWE), is integrated into the European Water Framework Directive, aiming for a "good ecological state" of waters by 2027 at the latest. This initiative is a response to the historical straightening and channelling out of many flowing waters, which has resulted in the loss of their natural function as a habitat and landscape feature.

The focus of the project is the renaturation of the Rödinghausen section of the Dornmühlenbach. The side channel has been ecologically enhanced, with over 80 meters of the stream freed from old piping and exposed. The natural restoration involved the creation of a new structured riverbed, and the stream has been designed with flat sections and integrated dead wood elements as flow deflectors.

Elger Marten, the owner of the site, suggested the renaturalization of the stream, and dense undergrowth has been removed to give the water its natural space back. The bank edges show varying angles to mimic the already exposed eastern section from 2021.

The project's goal is to help restore the natural function of flowing waters as a habitat and landscape feature, improving the quality of life in the "water" habitat. Regular interventions and maintenance work in the self-dynamic watercourse development will be minimized.

This project is a positive example of successful networking of employment initiatives, economic promotion, nature conservation, and inter-municipal cooperation. It is a testament to a broader social and legal change of mind that gives more attention to flowing waters.

The project was initiated on 4 March 2004 with the launch of the Water Development Project Weser-Werre-Else. The efforts are part of a broader movement towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
