The European structure is disintegrating

The European Union's green transformation, reminiscent of a thrilling tale, is currently facing a crisis. The Green Deal, a key initiative aimed at combating climate change, is under scrutiny and criticism, with some arguing that the entire green house of cards is collapsing.

This situation in Brussels bears a striking resemblance to a scene from the beloved Harry Potter series. Just as an invitation to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was ignored, so too has the Green Deal been met with resistance.

Initially, the strategy for the green transformation essentially exhausted itself in blocking other ways than the desired one through bans. However, much like the persistent Dementor, the invitation—or the Green Deal—refuses to be ignored.

Dursley, a metaphor for Europe, fled to a remote and inhospitable island off the English coast, but was still pursued by the invitation. In a similar vein, Europe's image as a green role model is under threat, as the Green Deal faces criticism and letters pouring in expressing disapproval.

The European automotive associations Acea and Clepa are raising concerns about the climate targets for 2030 and 2035, stating they are "simply no longer achievable." They advocate for a "market-based approach" to address these challenges, potentially expanding the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) as proposed by Frontier Economics in their "Plan B" for the energy transition.

In the new world shaped by US President Trump, economic strength is paramount. This form of coercion through market power began in Brussels, and President Trump is now using the same method to push his interests. Europe, too, must acknowledge this and in the future more strongly scrutinize the methods used to pursue even well-intentioned goals.

The giant Hagrid eventually delivers the invitation and takes Harry Potter away, symbolising the need for Europe to embrace the Green Deal and lead the way in the global fight against climate change. Regaining economic strength must be the top priority for Europe, but it should not come at the expense of the planet.

As the Green Deal situation unfolds, it serves as a reminder that wishful thinking—ignoring or denying reality—will not solve the climate crisis. Europe must face the challenges head-on, with a market-based approach and a commitment to sustainable practices, to ensure a bright and green future for all.
