The government of France has been officially dismissed by the French Parliament.
France's Government Collapses: Bayrou's Cabinet Resigns Amidst Budget Crisis
The government of François Bayrou, the Prime Minister of France, has fallen following a vote of no confidence in the National Assembly. On September 8, 364 deputies voted for the resignation of Bayrou's cabinet, as reported by Le Monde.
The move was initiated by François Bayrou himself, in an attempt to secure support amidst a crisis caused by disagreements over the 2026 budget project. However, Bayrou failed to secure the necessary backing from either the left-wing parties or the far-right National Rally (RN).
The far-right RN, led by Jordan Bardella, has significantly gained in popularity in the last month, with over 30% support, according to a recent poll published by Le Figaro. In contrast, Bayrou is trusted by only 14% of French people.
Emmanuel Macron, the French President, has appointed Sébastien Lecornu as the new Prime Minister, ruling out early elections. However, both the left-wing alliance "New National Front" (NFP) bloc and the far-right RN have opposed this plan.
The Bayrou cabinet had proposed to freeze both tax rates and social benefits and pensions at their current levels in 2026, due to increasing public debt. The cuts were estimated at €40 billion, along with increased taxes for large corporations and wealthy French citizens, which would have brought an additional €20 billion to the treasury.
The Republican Front strategy, aimed at siphoning votes from the far-right RN, has been adopted by leftist representatives. However, they have stated that they will not engage in a deal with Macron's forces this time.
In a speech on September 8, Bayrou declared, "While you have the power to overthrow the government, you do not have the power to turn away from reality. Spending will continue to rise, and the burden of debt, already unbearable, will become heavier and more expensive!"
The head of the Socialist Party faction in the National Assembly, Boris Vallot, has declared that the left should now lead the government. Meanwhile, the leader of the RN, Marine Le Pen, has expressed the far-right's readiness to take power.
The resignation of Bayrou's cabinet follows a similar fate as that of Prime Minister Michel Barnier, who also proposed significant spending cuts while drafting the 2025 budget. This political turmoil in France is expected to continue as Macron decides on his next steps.
