In an unexpected incident, a car with a horse trailer caught fire on the A61 in Freiburg-Ludwigshafen, near the Im Weidenfeld rest area, at around 12:50 PM today.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. The driver, a 35-year-old woman from the Freiburg area, managed to steer her car onto the hard shoulder, remove her infant from the backseat, and unhitch the trailer with the horse. The horse was temporarily housed at a nearby stable following the incident.
The Pellenz fire department responded swiftly, dispatching 14 personnel and 4 vehicles to the scene. Mendig highway maintenance and police were also present to manage traffic and ensure safety.
The fire is believed to have been caused by a technical malfunction originating from the engine of the car. The car was completely destroyed in the fire, and the estimated property damage is in the high four-figure range.

The incident caused a significant disruption, with the Ludwigshafen-bound lane being fully closed for approximately 45 minutes. This led to a 5 km backup on the highway.
