The Pforzheim University of Applied Sciences consistently maintains an impressive track record.

The University of Pforzheim and the town of Pforzheim continue to lead by example in promoting fair trade, with a series of engaging events aimed at students and citizens.

As a member of the steering committee of the Fairtrade Town of Pforzheim, the university has officially committed to fair trade and integrated it into all aspects of university life. This commitment was recognised a year ago when the University of Pforzheim was awarded the title of Fairtrade University.

The university's Fairtrade year 2023 kicked off with the campaign "Change Fashion," which commemorates the collapse of the Rana Plaza textile factory and abuses in the textile industry. Students learned about the challenges in the electronics industry, considering social and ecological consequences, in a special lecture. Anika Neugart delivered a lecture on "Slow Fashion - conscious, sustainable, and decelerated fashion consumption."

In November, a plant exchange event with a lecture on "Fair trade in the plant world" took place in Pforzheim. Fair snacks, plants, cuttings, and seeds were exchanged and given away, while attendees learned about the importance of fair trade in the horticulture industry.

The town of Pforzheim, too, is a Fairtrade Town, and both entities have held joint events to present their Fairtrade activities. One such event was a Coffee Walk & Talk, where students and citizens had the opportunity to learn about fairly traded coffee. The specific participants in this event are yet to be announced.

Remedy e.V. and the Erasmus Student Network organized a clothing exchange, while attention was drawn to abuses in cocoa farming during the Christmas action of Remedy e.V.

The university and the town of Pforzheim have also organised a soldering workshop, where students assembled their own computer mouse using fair soldering tin. A penalty shootout using fair footballs was held to draw attention to fair trade aspects.

Professor Dr. Ingela Tietze, Vice-Rector for Energy Management and Climate Protection, summarised the first year as successful. The university and the town of Pforzheim are planning further Fairtrade actions, ensuring that the spirit of fairness and sustainability continues to thrive in their community.
