The Rise outshines the Roses 2-1, sending them to the playoffs with a defeat
The Montreal Roses faced a disappointing 2-1 defeat against the Vancouver Rise in a recent North Super League (NSL) match. This loss marks the second consecutive victory for the Rise, who have now doubled the Roses' second-place lead.
In the 17th minute, Tanya Boychuk opened the scoring for the Roses, providing a glimmer of hope for the home team. However, the Rise responded before half-time, with Pechersky scoring in first-half stoppage time to equalise. The deciding goal came in the 24th minute, when Ward scored for the Rise, beating Lambert with a low shot to the left of the goalkeeper.
Gabrielle Lambert, who started as the Roses' goalkeeper, made two impressive saves on target during the match. Unfortunately, these efforts were not enough to secure a victory for the Roses, who have now slipped to fourth and last place in the NSL.
Meanwhile, the Roses' leading scorer, Abdu, was not part of the squad for this match. Abdu requested the termination of her contract with the Roses to pursue her career in a more suitable environment, and the agreement between the two clubs prevents her from facing her former team this season. Abdu had scored six of the Roses' 17 goals at the time of her departure.
The Rise secured the services of Abdu, who has since scored five goals for her new team, including one in the match against the Roses. Abdu expressed her excitement to join the Rise and gratitude for the opportunity to stay in the NSL.
Looking ahead, the Roses will visit the Ottawa Rapids on September 7 for their next game. The Rapids overtook the Roses in the standings with a 5-0 win over the Halifax Tides, and a victory against the struggling Roses could further solidify their position.
The Roses will meet the Rise one last time on October 11, the Roses' final home game. With the Rise showing no signs of slowing down, the Roses will need to find their form quickly if they are to secure a place in the playoffs.
