The Möhne Dam, a significant landmark in South Westphalia, is currently undergoing extensive construction work. The Ruhrverband, the organisation responsible for the dam, is carrying out various projects to ensure the safety of the structure and the survival of fish in the impounded lake.

One of the main focuses of the construction work is the aeration of the deep layers of the lake. This process, which involves the injection of oxygen, is being carried out to prevent fish deaths during the fall. Small bubbles of pure oxygen can be seen rising from the water, indicating the successful aeration. The organisation plans to continue this process until about mid-October 2021.

The aeration is necessary due to the formation of different temperature layers in the water. Cold water is found at the bottom, warm water above, and a jump layer in between. Oxygen consumption by biological processes in the jump layer is causing issues for cold-loving fish species at the bottom of the lake.

Simultaneously, several construction projects are happening at the dam. Repairs to the masonry, sluice houses, and wing walls are underway. A new canal, approximately 180 meters long, is being built through the balancing pond to ensure controlled water release via the main power plant even when the pond is empty. About 200 meters further on, the auxiliary power plant is being renovated.

The two turbine inlet gates at the dam are also being renovated. The components for these gates, which were installed in 1953, are being replaced or modernized. The cone-shaped nozzles located at the bottom of the balancing pond, important for aeration, are being modernized as well.

Entering or traversing the drained pond areas at the dam is strictly prohibited due to significant hazards. The balancing pond behind the dam is currently drained and serves as a spectacular sight.

A follow-up report on this topic will be aired on September 8, 2025, on Local Time South Westphalia's website television at 7:30 PM. Our sources for this report include the Ruhrverband and reporters on site.
