The U.S. is currently a source of mockery

In the realm of international politics and economics, the United States has seen a series of significant events in recent years.

One of the most notable developments was the U.S.'s continued military and industrial weakness, a concern that has been a topic of discussion. However, in 2022, the U.S. showed surprising signs of strength, partially halting and rolling back the Russian invasion of Ukraine with U.S. military aid. This marked a turning point in the U.S.'s military standing, albeit amidst ongoing concerns about its industrial capabilities.

The U.S.'s financial relief program during the pandemic was generous and effective, helping to mitigate the economic impact of the crisis. However, the country's tariff policy on China, particularly in 2025, has been a subject of controversy. Initiated by former President Donald Trump and his administration, the tariff policy led to a significant increase in tariffs early in the year, followed by rounds of negotiations and temporary tariff reductions, culminating in a trade deal framework.

The high tariffs strained US-China relations and affected global trade perceptions of the U.S. International opinion was mixed: some saw the moves as a continuation of aggressive protectionism, while others recognized efforts for negotiation. Notably, China's opinion leaders on social media portrayed the tariff truce as a resounding victory for Xi, while Trump's tariff concessions without major concessions from trading partners are widely perceived as making both him and the United States seem deeply unserious and an object of international ridicule.

In the realm of domestic politics, the U.S. government's turn against vaccines and the chaos at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have been points of concern. Additionally, incompetence at the Defense Department has been highlighted, particularly in relation to the campaign against the Houthis which made America's military a laughingstock.

However, the U.S. did achieve a significant victory in 2022 when ISIS was defeated at low cost through U.S. intervention. The transatlantic alliance was stronger than ever in 2022, despite concerns about its degradation.

In the economic sphere, the U.S. developed a world-beating vaccine during the pandemic, outperforming China in this regard. Inflation was high, but the labor market recovered quickly from the pandemic. However, trade policy uncertainty in the U.S. is still far higher than at normal times due to Trump's rapid-fire tariff policy changes.

The degradation of the transatlantic alliance is pointed out, with the U.S. government's actions and policies contributing to this decline. Trump's actions, such as receiving a $400 million gift from Qatar, raising concerns about corruption, and his tariff moves being widely mocked throughout China, have not helped matters.

In the geopolitical arena, U.S. intelligence correctly predicted the Russian invasion well in advance, but the U.S.'s response was not without criticism. Ren Yi, a Chinese commentator, stated that China fought a "counterattack in self-defense" and that Trump is irrational and America is a paper tiger. Xi has made a show of defying U.S. pressure and leaned into his self-styled image as a staunch steward of Chinese sovereignty.

Overall, the U.S. continues to face challenges in various spheres, from military and industrial weakness to trade policy uncertainty and corruption allegations. However, it has also shown signs of strength and resilience, particularly in its response to the pandemic and in the defeat of ISIS. The future will no doubt bring more challenges and opportunities for the U.S. to navigate.
