Thin Folding Design of Honor's New Device: Removed Camera Makes It Even More Slimmed Down

Honor introduces the Magic V5 in the competitive market for slim foldable devices. Yet, it's worth noting that the stated thickness of 8.8 mm doesn't account for the bulky camera component.

Thin Folding Design of Honor's New Device: Removed Camera Makes It Even More Slimmed Down

In the ever-evolving world of technology, Honor has unveiled its latest innovation - the Honor Magic V5. This sleek and compact foldable device is set to challenge the dominance of industry giants like Samsung, Google, Huawei, Motorola, and Oppo in the European market.

Weighing just 217 grams in the "Warm White" variant and 222 grams in other colours, the Honor Magic V5 is lighter than high-end smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max. The device is a mere 9 mm thick when unfolded, with the "Warm White" variant being 0.1 mm thinner, and 9 mm thick when folded.

The Honor Magic V5 is the successor to the Magic V3, which made its European debut at IFA 2024. This new foldable device boasts a 6.43-inch outer display, and a flexible 7.95-inch inner display with a resolution of 2352 x 2172 pixels. The displays have a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, ensuring smooth and responsive visuals.

Under the hood, the Honor Magic V5 is powered by Qualcomm's latest chip, the Snapdragon 8 Elite. The device comes with 12 to 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB to 1 TB of flash storage. However, specific details about the high-end specifications are not provided.

The device is equipped with a 5820 mAh battery, consisting of two cells, which should provide ample power for daily use. The Honor Magic V5 also supports the IP58 protection rating, offering slightly better dust protection compared to the IPx8 rating of the Magic V3.

The Honor Magic V5 is available in the colours "Ivory White", "Black", and "Dawn Gold" in Germany. Purchasing the device from the official shop comes with an immediate discount of €300, and a package that includes a 66W power adapter, a stylus, and a free display replacement within the first 12 months.

In the competitive landscape of foldable devices, the Honor Magic V5 stands out for its thinness. While the Oppo Find N5 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 are also thin devices, the differences between them are marginal. However, Honor's new offering is noted as the world's thinnest foldable phone.

In September 2024, Samsung presented its Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip series, Google introduced the Pixel Fold, and Honor showcased the Magic V5 and the Magic V Flip 2. With both major foldable form factors, Honor is directly challenging Samsung's foldables in the European market.

It's worth noting that the number 4 is considered unlucky in China, which is why there is no Magic V4 in the series. The rear camera element of the Honor Magic V5 appears to be nearly twice as thick as the device itself in images, but large sensors require a lot of space.

Both the LTPO OLED displays of the Honor Magic V5 can reach up to 5000 nits in HDR content. The global peak brightness of the outer display is 1800 nits, while the inner display is 1300 nits.

The Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Oppo's Find X5 have a higher IP68 dust protection rating than the Honor Magic V5. Despite this, the Honor Magic V5 presents an attractive option for those seeking a compact, high-performance foldable device.
