Third-year student delves into cinema industry experience
Bea Hammam, a third-year student at the University of Pennsylvania, is set to spend her next summer working at a Penn-sponsored internship at the Wharton School. This opportunity follows a series of enlightening experiences in the film industry that have fuelled her passion for cinema.
Last summer, Hammam participated in the Penn in Cannes course, attending the renowned film festival in France. This year, she delved deeper into the industry, taking a course on Artist Representation taught by visiting lecturer Randi Michel.
Hammam's experiences expanded further with two internships. One was an online role with Film Hub, a New York City-based film distribution firm co-founded by Alan d'Escragnolle, a 2011 Wharton graduate. In this position, she helped write posts for the company's blog and promoted films in their collection.
Her other internship was an in-person role with Hidden Pictures Media, a film production company founded by Todd Lieberman, a 1995 Penn graduate. As a development intern, Hammam read scripts, wrote summaries, and provided her personal critiques. The company was described as the "start to finish of the product."
Both internships offered Hammam a unique perspective on very different sides of the entertainment industry. The online internship provided insights into the career path for the film industry, while the in-person internship offered a behind-the-scenes view of the film production process.
Hammam found these experiences enlightening and believes they provided a "perfect mix of the process." She also found the course on Artist Representation helpful in recognizing her strength as a connector.
In addition to her film-related endeavours, Hammam has been actively involved in student theatre and film-related clubs at Penn, including Penn Players, Bent Button Productions, and the Wharton Undergraduate Media and Entertainment Club.
This fall, Hammam plans to spend the semester in Prague for intensive film production courses. With her passion for cinema growing stronger each day, Hammam is excited about her future in the film industry.
