Thirteen chapters of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) plan to call for an early leadership election, with seven chapters opting against this move.
The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in Japan is facing a potential early leadership election, as more than half of its lawmakers and prefectural chapters have expressed their intention to hold the election before the scheduled date.
According to the party's rules, a leadership election can be initiated if a request is received from more than 148 lawmakers and 24 prefectural chapters. As of now, 13 prefectural chapters have requested an early leadership election, while 7 have not. This means that the current state of requests indicates that more than half of the LDP's prefectural chapters have requested an early election.
The Shizuoka and Aomori prefectural chapters have already sent a written request for an early party presidential election, joining the 11 other prefectures that have made the same request. However, the search results do not specify the names of the prefectures that did not submit an early party chairmanship election request.
The Fukui and Okinawa prefectural chapters, on the other hand, have decided not to make such a request.
The LDP's prefectural chapters have until Monday to decide and submit their requests for an early leadership election. If the necessary number of requests is met, the LDP's leadership election can be held before the scheduled date.
It is important to note that the LDP requires a request from more than half of its lawmakers and prefectural chapters to hold a leadership election. The total number of lawmakers and prefectural chapters that need to request an early election to make it happen is 173.
The deadline for LDP lawmakers and prefectural chapters to submit written requests for an early leadership election is Monday. If the necessary number of requests is met, the LDP's leadership election could potentially take place before the scheduled date, marking a significant shift in the party's leadership.
