Mass gatherings in Rudolstadt for tranquil marksmanship festivities, attracting tens of thousands of participants - Thousands take part in serene avian hunting event
The ten-day Rudolstadt Volksfest, which concluded last Sunday, has been hailed as a resounding success, attracting an estimated half a million people and setting a new attendance record for Volksfests in Thuringia.
The event's manager, Frank Grünert, attributed the success to the favourable weather conditions, which were mostly dry and not too hot, with only two longer rain showers. He also highlighted the harmonious and peaceful atmosphere, a testament to the effective security concept and the focus on fairground operators and culture, rather than alcohol consumption.
Grünert emphasised that the event is not merely a drinking and eating festival or just any funfair. In fact, a significant highlight of this year's Volksfest was the presence of the Berlin Rumpel Pumpel Theater, a theater group from Berlin known for their ironic and rough folk theater that combines funfair entertainment with crime parody. The group performed at Rudolstadt's Volksfest in 2021 and was invited as a special cultural program element of the festival.
The fairgrounds were packed with a variety of attractions, including an 80-meter-high Ferris wheel and a 70-meter-high free-fall ride, which proved to be popular among the attendees. The event concluded on Sunday with the traditional crossbow shooting contest, a tradition that traces its roots back to the first such event held on August 28, 1722.
Notably, the Rudolstadt Volksfest was the largest Volksfest in Thuringia this year, surpassing the Rudolstadt Bird Shooting event, which concluded earlier. Despite the large crowds, there were no reported incidents during the event, making it a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
