Three essential terms to verify for the junior words examination.

The Youth Word of the Year competition, an annual event hosted by Langenscheidt since 2008, is in its final round for 2025. The competition invites youth aged 11 to 20 to participate in the nomination process, with the official event location not explicitly stated.

In 2021, the Youth Word of the Year was "Cringe", an expression used to describe second-hand embarrassment and awkward moments. Last year, the title went to "Aura", highlighting a person's charisma. Previous winners include "Swag" (2012), signifying coolness, and "Yolo" (2011), meaning "you only live once".

This year, the competition is heating up with a diverse range of contenders. "Gooning", a slang term for hours of self-pleasure and excessive porn addiction, is one of the top contenders. Another top three candidate is "That's crazy", an all-purpose phrase used when speechless or not in the mood for a real answer. "Are you checking?" is another contender, a phrase used to ensure understanding in a conversation.

The Langenscheidt jury, led by Patricia Kunth, emphasizes that sexual terms are part of youth slang. However, they also highlight that prolonged self-pleasure can encourage dopamine addiction and lead to an unhealthy relationship with one's own sexuality.

Other contenders for the 2025 Youth Word of the Year include "Smombie", referring to people absorbed in their smartphones, and "Babo", meaning boss. "Niveaulimbo" (2010), referring to shallow conversations, and "Hartzen" (2009), meaning doing nothing, are also past winners.

The final announcement of the Youth Word of the Year 2025 will take place on October 18 at the Frankfurt Book Fair. As the race heats up, discussions in families may start due to the Youth Word of the Year, showcasing how language can work, with teenagers intuitively using the terms and adults stumbling over them. Stay tuned for the announcement of the new Youth Word of the Year!
