TikTok Ban May Drive Gen Z Towards Donald Trump's Influence?

In the ongoing 2024 presidential election, the fate of popular social media app TikTok is under scrutiny. A bill passed by the US House of Representatives could potentially ban the app nationwide, sparking debate among politicians and users alike.

The primary goal of this bill is to either force the sale of TikTok from its Beijing-based parent company ByteDance or to ban it from the country. The bill aims to protect US data from malignant foreign interests like the Chinese Communist Party, as several Western countries have been considering bans due to fears over sensitive information being leaked and accessed.

The Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, has spoken out against a ban on TikTok, opposing such a measure. He believes TikTok is less of a danger to the USA than Meta (Facebook) and that Facebook poses a greater threat to democracy. This stance, particularly among younger voters who use the app extensively, could potentially sway votes in his favour.

On the other hand, the Democrat nominee and incumbent, Joe Biden, has stated he would immediately sign the bill into law if it makes its way through both the House and the Senate.

Not everyone is in favour of a ban. Linzi Taylor, a citizen, considers TikTok as a place where her business thrives and is important for her livelihood. She stated that she would not vote for a candidate who wants to ban TikTok. It's speculated that young people who were on the fence about their vote may now lean towards Trump due to his potential to save TikTok.

Celebrity Emily Ratajkowski believes the US government is terrified of the views and perspectives accessible on TikTok that American citizens might not have otherwise. She, along with many netizens, have expressed upset and dismay at the thought of TikTok being banned.

The Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin criticized the bill, stating it runs contrary to the principles of fair competition and justice. The article "The US might ban TikTok because of its ties to China" discusses the potential ban of TikTok due to its ties to China, while "AI-generated images of Donald Trump with Black voters spread before US presidential election" sheds light on other pressing issues in the election.

Hakeem Jeffries, the House of Representatives minority leader, has also voiced his support for the bill, stating it is necessary to protect US data and interests. The Senate will now scrutinize the bill and decide the fate of TikTok, with the outcome likely to have significant implications for the tech industry and the 2024 presidential election.
