Tim's Preference: Enduring Customs Across Four European Nations

In the heart of Europe, where long-lived cultures and treasured traditions thrive, we find ourselves captivated by the vibrant performances of Flamenco in Spain and Fado in Portugal, and the iconic double-decker buses of London.

Flamenco, a fast-paced art form hailing from the Andalusía region of Spain, is renowned for its dynamic energy. In Sevilla, considered the epicentre of this passionate dance, men perform machine-gun footwork, while women focus on graceful turns and smooth, dramatic steps. The rhythm is set by castanets and hand clapping, and flamenco's guitarists are often considered some of the best in the world. Experiencing this culture celebrated by and for the locals is more authentic than tourist shows.

Moving northwest, we arrive in Portugal, a country known for its soulful Fado music. Lisbon, its capital, is the city where informal singing performances can be experienced in the Bairro Alto and Mouraria districts. Fado songs often tell of sailors who never returned to port, sung by black-clad widows. This uniquely Portuguese style of music, with its bittersweet relationship with the sea, is a poignant reflection of Portugal's maritime history.

Venture further north to Coimbra, where Fado music is mainly performed by men. This city, nestled between the Mondego River and the hills of the Serra do Mondego, offers both expensive and free Fado shows in various neighbourhoods.

Leaving the Iberian Peninsula, we journey to Italy and the city of Venice. Known for its gondola rides, Venice offers a tranquil, dreamy experience, especially in the evening. Gondolas, first used in the 14th century as a more respectable form of transportation after horses were banned, are uniquely designed with flat-bottoms for navigating the city's lagoon's shifting sandbars.

Our final stop is London, a city where the double-decker buses are not only symbols of the city but also a fun and efficient way to get around. These iconic buses, recognisable the world over, started as two-story horse-drawn buggies in the late 19th century. On the popular route 15, there's a chance of getting picked up by a heritage "Routemaster" old-style double-decker bus. On Sundays when most sights are closed, climbing the stairs and grabbing a seat in a bus's upper deck can provide an overview of the city and a way to spend an otherwise unoccupied afternoon.

Europe, with its rich history and diverse cultures, offers countless opportunities for exploration and discovery. Whether it's the passionate rhythms of Flamenco, the soulful melodies of Fado, the serene glide of a gondola, or the iconic double-decker buses of London, there's a world of experiences waiting to be discovered.
