Tesla's Indian Adventure: A Journey of Delays and Breakthroughs

Tesla, the world-renowned electric vehicle manufacturer, has been exploring the Indian market for several years, but the journey has been filled with delays and challenges.

In 2016, Tesla expressed interest in the Indian market, but faced obstacles due to local sourcing rules and high import duties. Despite this, the leadership, including Elon Musk, JB Straubel, and Deepak Ahuja, focused on scaling production in the U.S. and China.

Fast forward to 2020, Tesla registered a subsidiary in Bengaluru, signaling a serious intent for the Indian market. However, internal turmoil at Tesla, including the departures of key executives, may have slowed decision-making regarding the Indian market.

In 2022, there was a breakthrough in Tesla's India strategy, with the company planning to launch its first showroom in Mumbai on July 15, 2023. The Model Y will be the first car to be retailed in India, and more models, including the Model 3, will also come to India, all of which will come as Completely Built Units (CBUs) from China.

Negotiations with Indian officials for potential factory locations in Gujarat and Maharashtra began in 2021, with David Feinstein, Senior Director of Asia-Pacific Operations, among the Tesla executives involved. However, Elon Musk remained focused on the Berlin and Texas Gigafactories, which may have delayed India plans further.

In early 2024, India announced a new EV policy, slashing import duties to 15% for manufacturers investing $500 million locally. This move was seen as a potential catalyst for Tesla to re-engage with Indian officials, who had previously asked Tesla to consider local manufacturing.

Despite the progress, high tariffs and India's preference for domestic manufacturing paused negotiations in mid-2023. Reports suggest that Tesla may begin imports in late 2024 while scouting factory locations in India.

Elon Musk's planned meeting with PM Narendra Modi, initially scheduled for April 2024, was postponed and rescheduled for mid-2024. The launch of the new showroom in Mumbai is still scheduled for July 15, 2023, and Tesla models will be available in India.

The journey for Tesla in India has been a long and winding one, but with the launch of the showroom in Mumbai and potential local production in the future, it seems that Tesla's Indian adventure is far from over.
