Tony Hawk's Iconic '900' Skateboard Sells for Record $1.15M

Julien's Auctions has made history with the sale of Tony Hawk's iconic 1999 X Games '900' Falcon 2 skateboard. The board fetched a record-breaking USD$1,152,000, marking a significant moment for skateboarding culture and collectibles. The auction, held by Julien's, also saw other notable items from Hawk's collection sell for high prices, with proceeds benefiting The Skatepark Project.

The auction house successfully marketed the lots, with most items fetching well above their pre-auction estimates. Tony Hawk's 1999 X Games 'Vert Singles' Bronze Medal sold for USD$8,960, surpassing its pre-auction estimate of USD$4,000 - USD$6,000. The skateboard, ridden by Hawk to victory in the 'Vert Best Trick' competition and 'Vert Doubles' event at the 1999 X Games, was not the only piece of memorabilia to draw high bids. His 1999 X Games helmet sold for USD$115,200, while other items like sneakers and knee pads also found eager buyers.

Martin Nolan, co-founder and executive director of Julien's Auctions, praised the sale, stating it was a historic result for the culture of skateboarding and collecting. The auction house also sold two Powell-Peralta decks - a ridden one for USD$57,600 and a 'House Fire Survived' deck for USD$51,200. Interested parties could view all the lots on Juliens' website.

Tony Hawk auctioned off these items to benefit The Skatepark Project and to move on from his collection, as he had not received private offers for them previously. A portion of the proceeds from the sale will support the development of over 700 global skate parks through The Skatepark Project. The auction house's success in marketing these lots has not only brought in substantial funds for a worthy cause but also highlighted the cultural significance and value of skateboarding memorabilia.
